It is not a mere coincidence that the Christmas feast is celebrated at the darkest time of the year. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, Christ is called the Dayspring of the East, likened to the rising of the sun at the dawn of the day. One would begin singing the hymns for Jesus’ birth near the solstice itself, considered the darkest day of the year. Therefore, the birth of Christ, the first light of Jesus in the world, is celebrated when the lengthening of daylight begins again.
This program will begin by candlelight, enshrouded in the darkness of Advent, singing ancient melodies of anticipation, pain, and hope. As the program moves forward, so will the growth of light and joy. Holst’s carol fantasy ushers in the fullest light of Christmas, bringing us from Advent to Christmas Day itself. What comes after is that light we have been waiting for, a light for which we don’t need a candle. It is the light of celebration, feasting, and community: for many, seen as the light of the birth itself. We mark this by singing together “O Come, all ye Faithful”, employing us to collectively adore the one born in a simple manger. Afterwards, we simply sing together, enjoy each other’s company, and bask in the glow of the feast with both sacred and secular songs, many of which are known to us, and some that may be new!
